Redding, CA

We’re here in the hotel becuase we ditched the camping idea for tonight. It’s smokey (from the wild fires), hot, and we’re tired from the long trip out here. We’re in Redding, CA and pretty sure that this would be the last place in the Pacific Northwest that we would ever want to live. Why? First, it’s so hot. It’s around 95 to 100 degrees out and dry so it is terribly uncomfortable outside, there was a bunch of wildfires around here so you’re unable to see anything for more than a mile or so away, and the town (city I guess…) is so bland and boring. We asked a few of the locals where to hang out and get a drink/food and they told us to check out the Market St. area. So we plug it into our GPS device and headed down to the downtown area?!? We get there and there isn’t a single shop open or even a resturaunt anywhere to get some grub so we walk around for about 30 min and in that time we see one or two other people total. That’s it… nothing open, no people, nothing to do, and just nothing. The town has a feeling of being dead. There’s tons of shops that have gone out of business and there’s just nothing appealing about it at all. Sad.
So we take off out of town and find a Red Robbin which is packed with people. Does everyone here just come here and not bother with any other place in town? I think so. As we wake up this morning at 7 am (yeah, it’s early) we both look at each other and say “lets get outta here!”. On ward and upward for us. If this is the worst of the trip then I’m fine with it. It wasn’t that bad just sad and boring. At least we got a nice hotel room and things were smooth with that (thanks Lauren’s mom for booking it!). More soon.

  • Hey you guys, I’m glad that you didn’t camp that first night in Cali, it sounds awful !!! Would rather have a double root canal than camp under those conditions. But glad you made it safely even if you were a little late arriving. There is no doubt in my mind that you will have better luck once you head north. You two are not used to desert-like weather. Glad to know the hotel was nice at least, my little contribution to your trip…..:) Lauren, stay away from those wildfires, hair catching on fire is a big no-no and Adam, you can imagine –a bald Lauren would mean a REALLY crabby Lauren. Oh, Rachel Ray was in Portland last night on her Tasty Travels show. Lots of cool places to go it seems—clubs, coffee shops, bakeries, restaurants, etc. But then you know, she says “yum-o” to everything. Drive safely…..Love, Mom
